Junior Instructor Interview
How has training in Tang Soo Do changed you as a person?
Trey: It has changed me because it makes me stronger, more agile, and it's fun!
Liam: Martial arts has given me confidence and self-esteem.
Addy: Tang Soo Do has changed me because it's taught me to be respectful and to have patience. Learning the material can sometimes come quickly, but sometimes, it takes longer to stick, so it humbles me to know that I'm not going to be the best at everything, but I have to keep working hard.
Ryan: Martial arts gave me discipline and perseverance that I lacked before I began. These allowed me to excel in my school work or any challenge that was thrown at me.
What do you enjoy most about helping teach younger or lower rank students?
Trey: I enjoy teaching because it gives me joy watching them get better and better.
Liam: I like watching how excited younger students are and teaching also helps me remember what I have learned.
Addy: I enjoy being able to see when a student catches on to something and they get excited about it. I also like when they ask questions, even if I don't have the best answer, it makes me feel like I'm adding onto their understanding.
Ryan: What I enjoy most about teaching is the knowledge that comes from it. I am gaining valuable social skills like clear communication, understanding how different people learn, and general people skills. It's also fulfilling that I know I am helping someone improve in more than just karate. I'm helping instill discipline, respect, and perseverance. These 3 qualities are what most of the world lacks, and teaching these to young people with untapped potential can help make the world a more peaceful place that all can enjoy.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting martial arts?
Trey: The advice I would give someone is don't give up, great things take time.
Liam: My advice would be to give it a try. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain.
Addy: I would say to go for it! Try it out. It's a great experience, teaches valuable skills, and opens amazing opportunities to create close friends.
Ryan: Don't be afraid. Don't let fear control you. Fear was one of the reasons I was hesitant to join. However, when I joined I couldn't have found a better family away from home. If you stick with it, your fellow students will become some of your closest friends, and your instructors like your parents. They are more than just your peers, they are family. You can miss this blessing if you let fear take hold, so don't let it win.
